Gary residents who participate in the city’s residential recycling program will see several significant changes beginning July 1 as city officials roll out a revised system designed to improve service, reduce contamination and ensure that recyclable materials are processed more effectively.

The City of Gary announced the changes following what officials described as a year-long review of the city’s recycling operations. The evaluation included discussions with local leaders, neighboring municipalities, recycling industry professionals and community organizations to identify ways to strengthen the program and improve accountability.

Among the most noticeable changes for residents is a new collection schedule. Beginning July 1, residential recycling will be collected every other week instead of weekly. Residents’ designated collection day will remain the same, but pickups will occur on a bi-weekly rotation. City officials are encouraging residents to place recycling containers at the curb the evening before their scheduled collection day to avoid missed pickups.
