In less than a month, Larimer County will open its new landfill north of Wellington, start winding down operations at its current landfill south of Fort Collins and open a new diversion and transfer station next to the old landfill. And that will cause at least a little bit of change for anyone who’s been using the current landfill, which has been open for more than 60 years and is located between Fort Collins and Loveland.
For now, the new $39.5 million North Landfill sits empty more than 20 miles away. It’s located west of Interstate 25 and near the Rawhide Energy Station. With 317 permitted acres for the landfill, it’s almost double the size of the current landfill’s 179 acres.
The new landfill is expected to have a lifespan of 100 years or more, and it could last forever if diversion is successful, said Duane Penney, Larimer County’s director of Solid ºÚÁÏÍø. When the new landfill opens Aug. 3, so will a new 44,000-square foot transfer station next to the current landfill. That transfer station is where most county residents will take their loads.
