Sullivan County residents can now recycle food scraps at no cost at all six county transfer stations as officials work toward building a countywide composting facility. The new program allows residents to drop off food waste at the county鈥檚 transfer stations in Monticello, Ferndale, Mamakating, Cochecton, Livingston Manor, and Barryville at no cost.
Accepted items include fruit and vegetable scraps, meat, dairy, egg shells, nuts, seeds, coffee grounds, and paper coffee filters, as well as tea bags with staples removed. 聽 Collected food scraps are transported to a commercial composting facility, where they are converted into compost instead of being buried in a landfill.
County officials say the expanded collection program is part of a larger effort to reduce waste and prepare for the construction of a Sullivan County composting facility.
