Parkersburg City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance to reestablish curbside recycling service, along with a rate structure adjustment for solid waste collection. Council President Andrew Borkowski said the city evaluated three options before settling on the current proposal, which aims to create a fair system for both recyclers and non-recyclers.
鈥淲e鈥檝e tried to do our best to come up with a plan that is fair and equitable to all parties, especially when it comes to recycling, and ultimately reducing waste to the landfill,鈥� Borkowski said. The ordinance would establish curbside recycling with a contractor that has 鈥渁 proven track record鈥� and what Borkowski described as 鈥減robably the most state-of-the-art facility in North America鈥� with fully automated processing.
The new system would expand what materials can be recycled compared to past programs and use single-stream collection, allowing residents to put all recyclables in one container without sorting, according to Borkowski.
