Parkersburg City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance to reestablish curbside recycling service, along with a rate structure adjustment for solid waste collection. Council President Andrew Borkowski said the city evaluated three options before settling on the current proposal, which aims to create a fair system for both recyclers and non-recyclers.
鈥淲e鈥檝e tried to do our best to come up with a plan that is fair and equitable to all parties, especially when it comes to recycling, and ultimately reducing waste to the landfill,鈥 Borkowski said. The ordinance would establish curbside recycling with a contractor that has 鈥渁 proven track record鈥 and what Borkowski described as 鈥減robably the most state-of-the-art facility in North America鈥 with fully automated processing.
The new system would expand what materials can be recycled compared to past programs and use single-stream collection, allowing residents to put all recyclables in one container without sorting, according to Borkowski.
