Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and the Port of Seattle (Port) announces the launch of Let’s Play … Without , a unified waste-reduction campaign designed to help visitors during the 2026 FIFA World Cup recycle, compost, and properly dispose of waste at major travel hubs, tourist destinations, and event locations across the region.
As one of 11 U.S. host cities, Seattle is preparing to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors for six World Cup matches. Regional forecasts estimate more than 700,000 additional visitors throughout the tournament. Let’s Play … Without will provide clear, highly visible guidance to reduce waste, prevent contamination, and keep public spaces clean. This effort draws on SPU’s longstanding leadership in recycling and composting and the Port’s role as a welcoming gateway for travelers.
The campaign offers physical and digital materials and tools for businesses and partner organizations across the region, ensuring visitors encounter consistent, easy-to-understand waste-reduction messaging, regardless of language. SPU and the Port are collaborating with a broad coalition—including Seattle Center, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the Seattle Aquarium, Friends of Waterfront Park, King County, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 10, and Zero Washington—to place unified signage and messaging across public spaces, displays, waste stations, event venues, and social media. All campaign materials are available at no cost for partners to use.
The effort reflects a shared dedication to managing the World Cup’s environmental impacts responsibly while showcasing Seattle’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. The campaign materials incorporate branding developed by Visit Seattle through the SEA26 Let’s Play Community Brand Toolkit. SPU and the Port thank Visit Seattle for making these resources available to partner agencies.
In addition to the Let’s Play … Without communications campaign, SPU and partner organizations are preparing for the environmental impacts of the World Cup by implementing other on-the-ground waste-reduction efforts. SPU is expanding the use of reusable dishware and cups while supporting food donation efforts by working with venues that host summer watch parties, fan celebrations, and large events. SPU is also conducting business outreach in key neighborhoods—hotels, restaurants, cafés, and other frontline customer service locations—to help reduce waste and avoid contamination. Residents will also receive resources on how to host waste-free watch parties at home.
“Seattle is excited to welcome visitors from around the world, and Let’s Play … Without reflects Seattle’s commitment to sustainability. By providing clear recycling and composting guidance in the places fans already gather, we’re making it easier for everyone to protect our environment and keep our city looking its best,” said Andrew Lee, General Manager, Seattle Public Utilities.
“As we prepare to welcome the world, we’re have an extraordinary opportunity to showcase the importance of our region’s natural resources to our quality of life. The waste bin wraps, posters and other assets from the campaign will help guide visitors to making waste-disposal choices that help keep our streets, parks, and region clean. With travelers arriving from across the globe, we’re proud to demonstrate how we can meld sustainability and stewardship with a world-class experience,” comments Sandra Kilroy, Senior Director of Environment and Sustainability, Port of Seattle.
