This Earth Month, UNtrash It returns and expands. Building on last year鈥檚 success in the New York area, collecting over 7,000 pounds of clothing, UNIQLO has teamed up with Piece of Cake Moving and Storage and WM to make it easier than ever to give unwanted clothing a second life 鈥 and now services Dallas and Los Angeles in addition to NYC. UNtrash It is designed to extend the values of RE.UNIQLO beyond the store, seamlessly diverting clothing from landfills and back into the circular economy鈥攁t a critical moment when consumers need an easy solution to responsibly part with textiles when moving.
The Problem: Every year, millions of tons of clothing waste are generated. Meanwhile, many people struggle with overflowing closets, packed drawers, and old clothes that sit unworn for years. The reason? A lack of easy, accessible ways to responsibly part with them鈥攅specially during life transitions like moving.
The Solution: UNtrash It. UNtrash It听offers a simple, frictionless way for consumers to responsibly recycle their clothes at key life moments鈥攚hether moving, decluttering, or simply making space. By leveraging Piece of Cake Moving鈥檚 logistics, UNIQLO鈥檚 in-store collection program, RE.UNIQLO, and WM鈥檚 advanced textile sorting and recycling infrastructure, this initiative helps each garment find its best next life鈥攖hrough donation or recycling鈥攕ending nothing to landfills. For Earth Month, UNIQLO, Piece of Cake, and WM are fully funding the program, making it completely free for consumers.
鈥淎t UNIQLO, our philosophy is to create high-quality, perfected essentials that our customers will love to wear for years to come,鈥 said Jean Shein, Global Director of Sustainability at UNIQLO. 鈥淲e are committed to taking ownership of every stage of a product鈥檚 lifecycle, from initial design to the end of its wearable life. Through RE.UNIQLO, we extend the life of our products with care and intention. UNtrash It complements this commitment by bringing RE.UNIQLO directly into customers鈥 lives, making it simple to recycle their clothing even during life鈥檚 big transitions, like moving homes. Together, these efforts reflect our respect for both our customers and the products they choose to wear, ensuring cherished clothes find new life instead of ending up in landfills.鈥
“At Piece of Cake Moving, we’re committed to making every move a piece of cake. Before a customer starts packing, we encourage them to take a moment to edit their closet: if they haven鈥檛 worn something in a year, it鈥檚 probably time to donate or sell it, rather than moving items they don鈥檛 love or use. The UNtrash It partnership with UNIQLO and WM this听Earth Month听makes it even easier to听donate听clothes听during our customer’s moving day, while giving those items a second life and ensuring they don鈥檛 end up in a landfill,鈥 said Najah Ayoub, CMO of Piece of Cake Moving & Storage.”
鈥淲M is a leader in textile recycling by building infrastructure that can reduce the amount of clothing sent to landfills,鈥 said Tara Hemmer, chief sustainability officer, WM. 鈥淥ur textile recycling facility, a first-of-its-kind in the U.S., alongside collaborations like the one WM has with UNIQLO and Piece of Cake, is helping advance the industry and show consumers that unwanted clothing can be recycled rather than thrown away.鈥
