Brattleboro has officially started its own compost collection program. Collection started July 6, a new truck was purchased, and two employees were hired. Employees are learning the routes and the containers that residents are using.
The new program comes as a result of negotiations with Casella ºÚÁÏÍø Systems, which still provides hauling for trash and recycling. Brattleboro anticipates an annual savings of $117,960 on compost collection costs, with the program projected to cost about $227,250.
The Select Board approved a seven-year contract with Windham Solid ºÚÁÏÍø Management District to deliver food scraps and organic materials. WSWMD Executive Director Bob Spencer called it “a really big deal for us.” Spencer said the agreement locks the town into “a very competitive rate” and costs less than the trash pickup.
